Historical evolution and development of Hotel Industry

Historical evolution and development of Hotel Industry:

Early travelers were either warriors or traders or people in search of knowledge or religious point of view. There were no hotels at that time.warriors and conquerors pitched their tents for accommodation while traders and others placed a high value of hospitality and sometimes traded their merchandise for lodging.

Inn keeping can be said the first commercial enterprise and Hospitality is one of the first service where money was exchanged. In the Biblical times, inns used to offer only a cot or a bench for the comer.Travelers used to stay in a large communal rooms with no sanitation and privacy. The rates were of course reasonable but the company was rough because the travelers share the same quarter with their horses and livestock.
King James version of Bible mentioned that the Bethleham innkeeper turned Mary and Joseph away because that place was unsuitable to a woman about to give birth to a child. At that time, probably for several centuries men and women shared their same room along with their horses and livestocks.
Till the industrial revolution of 1700s,no significance improvement was made in the inns and travens and there were not very suitable for aristocrates. To accomodate wealthy travellers, luxurious structure were constructed with private rooms, individual sanitation and comforts of a European castle. These elegent new features adopted the french word 'Hotel'. Their rates were beyond the reach of the ordinary person.
Throughout the 1800s, American innkeepers improved their service and continued to build larger and more amply equipped properties and most of these properties were located near sea port towns. Slowly this process increased leading to the development of comfortable and sanitary lodging within the reach of an ordinary person.

A modern Hotel establishment

What is a hotel?
A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis for the people who stay in it.In times past, the provision of basic accommodation consisted only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand. But now, this has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning. Additional common features found in hotel rooms are a telephone, an alarm clock, a television, a safe, a mini-bar with snack foods and drinks, and facilities for making tea and coffee. Luxury features include bathrobes and slippers, a pillow menu, twin-sink vanities, and Jacuzzi bathtubs. Larger hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a restaurant, swimming pool, fitness center, business center, childcare, conference facilities and social function services. The above facilities may vary from hotels to hotels according to their standard and structure.

A hotel is often said "A home away from home".It is the second home when we have to move out from our home for some days due to our different types of works. Now a days many people travel from one place to another due to their business works, trade, for recreational activities also, and many more.A hotel provides the homely environment and services to its guests when people are away from their homes.

Now the question comes, how can we determine the standard of hotel? we can determine it by the levels of service provided,by its infrastructure and the standard of furnishing and equipments used for decoration and artworks.
